trans-murray match play

Battle for team glory in SGA’s annual Trans-Murray Match Play!

Here's your opportunity to play in a team-based, match play format; one of the most exciting formats in golf!

The TMMP is SGA's annual Ryder Cup-style tournament between teams of SGA golfers representing regions North & South of the Murray River. Held annually since 2014, the event has grown monumentally over the years, and is a must-play on many SGA golfers' calendars.

World team match play events--like the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup--generate HUGE levels of excitement, energy and passion for the participants and their respective teams. And the TMMP is no different! (Some would even argue that it’s even MORE passionate and exciting!)

The TMMP Format

Day 1

Two-Player Ambrose Matchplay

Teams of two playing Two-ball Ambrose Matchplay. Each ambrose pair posts a stroke score for each hole and the best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each team is the same, the hole is halved. Teams which have the same handicap will play off scratch together. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Day 2

Two-Player Alternate-Shot Matchplay

Teams of two playing Alternate Shot with a twist. All players tee off, then team-mates swap drives and hit their second shot with their partner's ball. Each team then chooses the best of the two resultant shots, and continue alternating shots (as in foursomes) with the chosen ball and the best stroke score wins the hole. Teams off the same handicap will play off scratch together. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Day 3

Singles Matchplay

One-on-One Matchplay. Each player is paird off against a player from the opposite team. The best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each player is the same, the hole is halved. Players off the same handicap will play off scratch together. If a player has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

History of the Trans-Murray Match Play

At the 2014 Cash & Co Classic at Barnbougle Dunes (now the SGA Tasman Classic), at little friendly banter with a pinch of interstate rivalry between a few NSW & Vic SGA Tour players somehow turned into furious and hilarious game of one-up-manship. As the claims became more outrageous, it became clear there was only one place to settle the matter - on the golf course.

The Inaugural event

With a large gang of NSW SGA Tour players already planning to play in the 2014 Kelly Gang Shootout in Cobram-Barooga, the idea was born to have a friendly matchplay contest on the Friday arvo to settle the matter once and for all.

The Format was 17 matches of individual matchplay to decide the inaugural winner of The Trans-Murray Matchplay Perpetual Trophy. On July 25, 2014 on The Old Course at Cobram-Barooga, the inaugural SGA Tour TMMP took place and was an instant hit. In a few short hours of golf on the NSW-Vic border, the seeds were sown on what was to become an exciting annual tournament and a highlight on the SGA event schedule.

The event grows...

The event has been held in multiple locations over the years, with the choice of host “towns” alternating between those closer to Sydney, and those closer to Melbourne, thus giving each state’s players a home-course advantage.

It has grown each year and is a testament to the fun of teams matchplay and the great spirit in which the event has been played. In 2018 we changed the team names to North & South of the Murray to make it more inclusive and to help us balance numbers on the two teams each year. After holding the event on The Mornington Peninsula in Victoria in 2017 and the Hunter Valley in NSW in 2018, the TMMP returned to its traditional roots on the Murray River in 2019 for the first time since the inaugural year. The sixth & seventh TMMPs were played at Corowa Golf Club, the most complete Murray River golf facility in the closest location between Melbourne & Sydney. 64 golfers from NSW, QLD & Victoria attended the 2019 event at Corowa GC.

In 2021, the event returned to Canberra. The event and location proved such a success that players overwhelmingly requested a return in 2022.
