SGA Tour TMMP

The SGA Tour Trans-Murray Matchplay is an annual Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup-style
event between teams of SGA Tour golfers representing North & South of the Murray River.

History

At the 2014 Cash & Co Classic at Barnbougle Dunes (now the SGA Tasman Classic), at little friendly banter with a pinch of interstate rivalry between a few NSW & Vic SGA Tour players somehow turned into furious and hilarious game of one-up-manship. As the claims became more outrageous, it became clear there was only one place to settle the matter - on the golf course. With a large gang of NSW SGA Tour players already planning to play in the 2014 Kelly Gang Shootout in Cobram-Barooga, the idea was born to have a friendly matchplay contest on the Friday arvo to settle the matter once and for all.

The Format was 17 matches of individual matchplay to decide the inaugural winner of The Trans-Murray Matchplay Perpetual Trophy. The excitement was evident in the weeks prior to the event with the interstate rivalry bubbling away on the SGA Tour Victoria and SGA Tour NSW Facebook pages. On July 25 2014 on The Old Course at Cobram-Barooga, the inaugural SGA Tour TMMP took place and was an instant hit. In a few short hours of golf on the NSW-Vic border, the seeds were sown or what was to become an exciting annual tournament and a highlight on the SGA Tour event schedule.

The event has grown each year and it is a testament to the fun of teams matchplay and the great spirit in which the event has been played. In 2018 we changed the team names to North & South of the Murray to make it more inclusive and to help us balance numbers on the two teams each year. 52 golfers (pictured above) from NSW and Victoria attended the 2018 event in The Hunter Valley. The TMMP has already become a major annual highlight on the calendar for many of our golfers. We expect more than 70 golfers in 2019 and we look forward to the TMMP growing every year into a major annual SGA tournament.

The 2019 Trans-Murray Match Play: Corowa Golf Club, Murray River, February 1 – 3

After holding the event on The Morninton Peninsula in Victoria in 2017 and the Hunter Vally in NSW in 2018, the TMMP returns to its traditional rooots on the Murray River for the first time since the innaugural year. For the sixth TMMP we are heading to Corowa near the Rutherglen region which is well known as a wine-making region. The Murray is home to some magnificent golf resorts and courses and we chose Corowa GC as it is the most complete Murray River golf facility in the closest location between Melbourne & Sydney.

The 2019 TMMP Format

Friday: Two-Ball Ambrose Matchplay - Teams of two playing Two-ball Ambrose Matchplay. Each ambrose pair posts a stroke score for each hole and the best stroke score wins the hole. If the stroke score from each team is the same, the hole is halved. If the two teams have the same handicap, they play off scratch together. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole. Two shots difference = a shot on the two hardest holes and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Saturday: Trans-Murray Foursomes Matchplay - Teams of two playing Foursomes with a TMMP twist. All four players tee off, then team-mates swap drives and hit their second shot with their partner's ball. Teams then choose the best of the two balls after two shots and continue alternating shots (as in foursomes) with the chosen ball and the best stroke score wins the hole. If teams have the same handicap, they play off scratch together. If a team has one more shot on handicap, they get a shot on the hardest hole and so on. Team captains will aim to match teams with similar handicaps so there are very few shots given.

Sunday: Singles Matchplay - Each team will be ranked in handicap order and be matched in singles matchplay against the player with the corresponding ranking from the other team. The best individual stroke score wins the hole. As above, any difference in handicap will mean the lower handicapped player concedes shots on the hardest hole.

The 2015 Trans-Murray Match Play: Canberra, Jan 30 - Feb 1

The fun, camaraderie and great spirit between the teams in the first TMMP made it inevitable that the event would develop into an annual tournament. Canberra was chosen as the neutral venue for 2015 with the plan of rotating between the host States and neutral venues in the future. The 2015 TMMP was played at Federal Golf Club, Gungahlin Lakes and Yowani Country Club. For a full list of results, check out the 2015 TMMP Results page.

The 2014 Trans-Murray Match Play: Cobram-Barooga, July 25

At the first TMMP, the NSW SGA Tour team took the chocolates by a single match. In a thrilling event played in great spirit, NSW prevailed by the narrowest of margins. In all four of the closest matches that were decided on the final green with a ‘1-up’ result, NSW scored wins to secure a 9-8 win. Check out all the results on the 2014 TMMP Results page.
